OSWEGO, NY – Dozens of community members and visitors filled the Clubhouse Tavern for the United Way’s ninth annual Harborfest Breakfast.
Committee members and volunteers kept busy cooking and serving breakfast all morning as those eager support Stuff-A-Bus gathered to enjoy breakfast and support a worthwhile project.
Partnering with more than 20 business and organizations, as well as school districts throughout Oswego County, United Way of Greater Oswego County’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign collects donations of school supplies for distribution to less fortunate students throughout Oswego County.
“Each year Oswego County school districts experience an increase of students who do not have the means to purchase the supplies necessary to begin the school year. Our Stuff-A-Bus program looks to address that situation and provide as many children as possible with school supplies,” said Melanie Trexler, executive director of the United Way.
Planning committee chairperson Dan Dorsey of co-sponsor Eagle Beverage, was impressed with the support the event received from the community and praised the committee members and the many volunteers for make the breakfast possible.
“The support we received from both community members and the many visitors who were in town for Harborfest was tremendous,” said Dorsey. “Thanks to the generosity of those who attended, we raised more than $2,900 to benefit the annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The genuine concern that was expressed for our youth is a wonderful example of community helping community.”
That community concern took on a personal touch when Rob McCarey, winner of the 50/50 drawing, donated his prize of $334.
Trexler added that the success of the United Way Harborfest Breakfast would not have been possible if not for the combined efforts the planning committee.
“The committee members, Robert McGrath and Liz McGrath of co-sponsor Clubhouse Tavern, co-chairperson, Liz Dorsey, John and Laurie Kelly, John Michael Kelly, Jim and Meg Schneider, Patrick and Kevin Barry and Bernie Coe unselfishly donated their time and talents to this event and demonstrated their genuine concern for our community, United Way and our youth. I would also like to acknowledge, Robert and Liz McGrath, Dan and Liz Dorsey, Davis Brothers, Eagle Beverage, Sithe Energy, Dahl’s Diner, Wiltsie Construction and Wades Diner for their donations to the breakfast,” said Trexler.
Trexler added that the money raised at the breakfast would be used to purchase additional school supplies to supplement what has been donated to date.
