On Saturday, September 27th at 8:00am in the pouring rain the American Red Cross Bridges to Caring Walk began.  Even though it was raining and cold, a generous public turned out to help the Red Cross raise over $11,000 to help provide services to residents of our communities.  There were employee groups from Constellation Energy, Windstream Communications, Birdseye Foods, many single walkers and family groups as well.

The Walk began at about 9:00am with the Windstream Communication “Green Truck” leading the pack as they crossed the street and headed over the first bridge.  Some walked with umbrellas, but many just laughed, smiled, endured the rain and enjoyed the walk around the bridges in Fulton.  Upon return to the Price Chopper parking lot the walkers were treated to bottled water, fresh fruit and cheese sticks all generously donated by the Fulton Price Chopper. All walkers received a t-shirt that listed over 40 local businesses as t-shirt sponsors.  Each t-shirt sponsor also received a sign for their place of business indicating that they supported the American Red Cross Bridges to Caring Walk.  As the walkers walked the loop around the bridges many noticed several businesses on the route displayed these signs in their windows as a sign of support.

In an effort to encourage pre-registration this year the Red Cross put together a “Healthy Living” basket that included items such as Fulton and Oswego YMCA gift certificates, a gift certificate from Riverview Wellness, a book from the River’s Edge bookstore, a two night stay at Serendipity, a local bed and breakfast as well as many other “wellness” related items.  The basket, valued at over $600, was won by Denise Reynolds who had signed up to walk as part of the Birdseye group.

A coloring contest, sponsored by Pathfinder Bank, was also part of the event.  The winners were chosen from hundreds of entries collected over the past two months.  This year’s winners were Noah Hornig  in the  K through third grade class and Naomi Abrahams in the fourth through sixth grade class  Each winner will receive a $50 savings bond.

Sponsors such as Windstream, Constellation, Pathfinder and NRG, along with t-shirt sponsors, businesses who donated to the “Healthy Living” basket, and the walkers who showed up to support the American Red Cross are what allows the Red Cross to provide much needed services to families affected by local disasters such as fires, without this support the American Red Cross would not be able to achieve it’s goals and mission.

If you are interested in supporting the American Red Cross either financially or by volunteering your time please stop by the Oswego Branch Office at 333 West First Street or call 343-0967.
