Bright Horizons Members Discover Joy Of Gardening

FULTON, NY – Members of the Bright Horizons Clubhouse in Pulaski have been busy this year tending to their very first vegetable garden.

The members hope to raise enough so that they can enjoy fresh, home grown vegetables and share their harvest with the local food pantry in Pulaski.

“From time to time our members have had to turn to our local food pantries for their own food subsidy.  When we discussed planting our own garden they were eager to do it and are looking forward to a plentiful harvest so they can give back to the food pantry and help those who are in need of food in our community,” explained Jill Slocum, program advisor for the Bright Horizons Clubhouse.

“The members have planted a variety of vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, corn, cucumbers, squash and more and are enjoying the experience of tending to their own garden and are looking forward to the day when they can prepare and enjoy fresh vegetables from their garden at their meals here at the clubhouse and make their first donation to the food pantry. It is a great outdoor project that allows our members to work together to achieve a goal they will truly be proud of,” added Slocum.

A program of Catholic Charities of Oswego County, Bright Horizons Clubhouse is located at 3412 A Maple Ave., Pulaski.

It is recipient run with the aid of peer support and provides a community service club for past and current recipients of mental health services.

The emphasis at Bright Horizons is on the rehabilitating properties of cooperative volunteer work, socialization and informal presentation as members work together to keep the club running smoothly.

“Our members enjoy being involved with their community and being a part of Bright Horizons,” said Slocum. “This is a very rural area.  Having a club like Bright Horizons available to provide members with social interaction is wonderful. It is a positive experience for them to join us for lunch and share a meal with their fellow members. For many it is their only hot meal of the day. I encourage community members to stop by our new location for a tour of the facility and to learn first-hand about the many services we provide here at Bright Horizons.”

Bright Horizons Clubhouse is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
