OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball team suffered a 70-62 setback to Brockport despite an impressive first-half defensive performance on Friday night in Max Ziel Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 5-13 on the year and 2-9 in SUNYAC action while the Golden Eagles go to 6-13, 5-7.
Oswego used a stifling full-court press in the opening 20 minutes, turning over Brockport eight times en route to a 35-24 advantage at half. A slow start out of the gate in the third quarter gave way to Brockport gaining an edge with 55 seconds left in the period, a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Heather Hebert recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points to go along with a contest-best 11 rebounds. Also in double-figures in the points column was Hebert’s senior classmate Mary Mazzella, notching 11 points. The senior also tied her career-high for steals on Friday, taking the ball from the Golden Eagles six times. That mark matched her six against Fredonia on Feb. 5, 2016.
Accounting for the Lakers’ other five steals on the night were Zana Dillard with three and Courtney Ameele with two. Ameele was Oswego’s third-highest scored with nine points while Dillard was among a trio of players with four points, including Morgan Jordal and Quincy Zimmerman. Rounding out the Laker scorers were Alison Nunziato with six points and Rachael Windhausen with two.
Oswego will return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts No. 23 Geneseo.
