OSWEGO, NY – Once again the Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin staff was determined to “Go for the Gold” and once again the “gold” was achieved.
The award-winning Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin newspaper continued its list of achievements as it earned “All New York Gold Overall Newspaper” at the annual 2011 Empire State School Press Association Awards ceremony.
Traditionally, one of the top scholastic publications in New York State the Buccaneer Bulletin staff returned to Oswego with well over 20 awards.
Superintendent of Schools Bill Crist said, “I am very proud for the Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin as the staff and advisors continue to set the standard for high school publications. Year-in and year-out the newspaper staff is recognized for its tremendous journalistic and artistic abilities.”
Not only did the Buccaneer Bulletin staff earn a “gold” for their newspaper, but the staff was also recognized with “golds” for the March 2011 editorial page as well as layout and typography portfolio and the coverage of the “Post-Prom Party Cancellation” and earned a silver for the December 2010 editorial page.
Monek Cullen was the recipient of several awards including several “gold” awards including front page design portfolio, a portrait photo of Mr. Bill Noun, a feature on “Excessive Eating,” a photo of a child with Santa and a “gold” for the picture layout and story for the DWI Event.
Cullen earned “silver” awards for feature photos of graffiti vandals and Oswego High School Principal Brian Hartwell’s hands. A photo “Sobering Look at the DWI Event” earned her a bronze.
Jasmine Davis received two “gold” awards. Her editorial “No Post-Prom Party” was recognized as was her editorial piece on “Cuts Should Spare Planned Parenthood.” She also earned an honorable feature for an “Athlete of the Month” story.
Katherine Robinson and Kathryn Whelsky both received “silver” awards for their columnist portfolios.
Heather Rounds received a “silver” award for her sports feature “Service Project Labor of Love.”
Meanwhile, Meghan Carl received a” bronze” for her sports feature “Concussions.”
Tina Buckingham also earned a “bronze” award for her picture layout-story on an “Artist of the Month.” The trio of Buckingham-Davis-Cullen also received a “bronze” for their design portfolio.
The Oswego High School Buccaneer Bulletin has a tradition of being one of the finest scholastic publications in New York State. Once again the staff has risen to the challenge to provide a quality newspaper to the students and staff.
