The Section III Division II ice hockey title will be on the line on Saturday when the Oswego High School Bucs face off against the Brothers of CBA on the Utica Aud ice at 3:15 p.m.
On Thursday night the Bucs gave up a late goal with time winding down and were forced to skate not one, but two, overtime sessions before skating away with a 5-4 win over second seeded New Hartford.
The action culminated two days of exciting semifinal action in Division II as the night before CBA captured a berth in the sectional final with a triple overtime win against number one seeded, and regular season champion, Skaneateles.
The Bucs were tired, but in the second overtime Dave Walpole picked up the puck at center ice off a broken play and fired a long shot that beat the goalie to send the Bucs into the title game.
Oswego appeared to be in relatively good shape as the Bucs held a two goal lead in the final period. However, in the waning moments of regulation Spartan Greyden Nimey tied it up to force the extra sessions.
The home team Spartans went up 2-1 after one period, but Oswego scored two in the second to enter the third with a 3-2 lead.
In the end there was a balanced scoring attack for the Bucs as Jake Anderson, Brandon Tracz, Travis Kearns, Sean Mooney and Walpole all scored. Zach Zerrahn had three assists while Justin Clark, Keanrs and Tracz each had one.
In the net Chase Izyk stopped 38 shots while Mike Cuchiarale had 36 saves in a wide open game.
Oswego meets CBA and the winner advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Tournament that begins next week.
