Buddy and Porky Pet Health – Put An End To ‘Pet Leasing’

Porky and Buddy

Dear Readers,
Did you know that some pet stores in New York sell pets using a financing/leasing scheme that is essentially rent-to-own?

Legislation has been introduced in New York State that would ban this predatory lending practice and it needs your support. The legislative memorandum explains it best:

“Pet leasing is a predatory practice that preys on people who cannot always afford a companion animal. Many do not understand they are entering into a lease agreement for an animal for multiple months. In the process, these individuals are forced to pay far more than they realized. These high interest lease arrangements mean the adopting family does not legally own their new pet. The leasing entity is the legal owner of the animal until all terms of the lease are met. Rhode Island and California have already outlawed this financial scheme. This legislation will put to an end the deceptive practice of pet leasing in New York State.”

What this means is that unsuspecting animal lovers can lose their leased pets if they miss payments or are unable to buy out their contracts at the end of their leases.

The animals can be repossessed, sort of like a used car ore a sofa.

We’re sure you would agree that is just not right.

Please call your New York State Assembly Member, Hon. William Barclay, (120th District), at (518) 455-5841 or Hon. Bob Oaks, (130th District) at (518) 455-5655, (for the Western part of Oswego County) and your State Senator, Sen. Patty Ritchie, at (518) 455-3438, and urge them to sign on as cosponsors of A.10082/ S.7415-A to prohibit the leasing of dogs and cats and pass the bill before the 2018 session adjourns in June.

It’s OK to just speak to a staff member.
