Through the Arts Alive! Program, college students and seniors come together in a novel learning environment where “student” is “teacher.”

Students from SUNY Oswego’s Art Club volunteer their time and talent teaching residents some basic techniques in a variety of mediums. The students get together with resident learners twice a month.

Recently students helped seniors with a watercolor project; offering some constructive suggestions and tips on techniques as the residents created their own works or art.

“Our residents truly enjoy the class and getting to know their young instructors,” said Peggy LiVoti, director of activities at St. Francis Commons. “The process of painting a picture from start to finish is rewarding, but interacting one-on-one while engaged in a learning activity has proven to be a great experience for all involved in this project.”

The program has been active at St. Francis Commons over the course of the last three college semesters, and the plan is to continue Arts Alive! well into the future.

St. Francis Commons Assisted Living Residence is a part of The St. Luke Family of Caring, an affiliation of community-based, not-for-profit healthcare providers serving the greater Oswego County area.

Located on the St. Luke healthcare campus in the City of Oswego, St. Francis Commons provides supportive housing and home care services in a single-story residence accommodating 60 individuals in fully equipped private or shared-private rooms.
