Pharmacy Students Learn New Skills At Oswego Hospital

OSWEGO, NY – Two pharmacy students with local ties gained experience in a hospital setting as they learned alongside Oswego Hospital pharmacists.

Aric Iosue, an Oswego native, is in his sixth and final year at Rutgers University’s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy.

During this last year of school, he took part in seven rotations with the Oswego site being his first in a hospital setting.

“The drugs used in the hospital and community are different,” he said. “This rotation has really helped with my education. I learned sterile preparation in the intravenous room, and I’ve learned about infectious diseases and antibiotic therapy formulas.”

Iosue became interested in a career as a pharmacist, based on an interest in biology and healthcare.

Since attending pharmacy school he has worked at a retail store, and said he would likely work in a local retail store after graduation.

He is the son of David and Gail Iosue and grandson of Anthony Iosue, all of Oswego.

The second pharmacy intern, Stephanie Wiemeier, of Phoenix, also enjoyed her first rotation in a hospital setting in Oswego.

She is a second year student at the recently opened Wegmans School of Pharmacy located at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

One new experience for her was mixing an intravenous solution known as a Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).

Patients are sometimes fed through a TPN after surgery and when their body can’t handle any food in their gastrointestinal tract.

“I learned about this technique in pharmacy school, but here I actually put one together,” Wiemeier, said. “The whole process, which includes several math calculations, can take up to an hour to complete.”

Wiemeier, who was a New Vision student while in high school, also has experience working in a retail pharmacy setting.

This rotation at Oswego Hospital, she said, exposed her to a new side of her chosen career.

“I have had a lot of fun on this rotation, and I feel I have learned a lot,” she said. “Everyone has been encouraging me to learn even when they were busy. It’s been a good rotation.”

Wiemeier is the daughter of Steve and Sandy Wiemeier, of Pennellville.

Serving as one of the interns preceptors has been Oswego Health Pharmacist Sandra Obleman.

“I really enjoy having the students,” she said. “I like to have the students learn right alongside me when I am completing tasks. They also help keep me sharp as some of the things in their curriculums are different from what I learned as a 2001 pharmacy graduate.”
