OSWEGO, NY – Saturday morning of Classic Weekend marks the fifth year for the Ride with the Legends in the Canale Insurance 2-seat Supermodified. Six Hall of Fame drivers will each be doing three rides.
Two of the drivers, Eddie Bellinger and Joe Gosek, have been involved with the program since the inaugural year.
Dave McKnight will be making his third appearance in the car.
Mike Ordway will be driving for the second year.
The “Jersey Jet,” Joey Payne, and “The Shoe,” Dave Shullick will be making their first appearance behind the wheel.
Payne said, “I’m honored to be asked. It’s such a great opportunity to get with the true race fan and show them what being in a Supermodified is all about, and I’ve heard the 2-seater is pretty good on the track. It’s the closest anybody is going to come to what we experience without going out and driving themselves.”
Shullick added, “It’s so much different from the other side of the track. I’m sure those who go for the ride will have an entirely different appreciation for what the drivers do on the race track.”
Shullick said he has been getting into shape for the rides by exercising and has even lost ten pounds.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” The Shoe said.
Rides will start at 8:30 and, as always, Eddie Bellinger will be the first driver on the track.
“I’ve got to help Brandon with the 02.” said Eddie, “Besides, I get to go out on the sticker tires.”
John Costello & Associates provides three sets of new tires every year for the 2-seater, providing one set goes on for the Ride with the Legends.
Gosek will take his riders out starting at 9, followed by McKnight at 9:30, Shullick at 10, Ordway at 10:30 and Payne at 11.
McKinght said, “It’s always nice to be asked back and so much fun to interact this way with our fans.”
Ordway seconded that, saying “one of my long time crew members is going for a ride with me this year. I’m sure he’s going to see things a whole lot different than he does just standing in the pits watching.”
Gosek added, “We’ve got riders coming from several states and two Canadian provinces. That just goes to show how popular the Supermodified is.”
Everybody who takes a ride in the Ride with the Legends program will get a gift bag filled with items from participating sponsors.
Two Seat Supermodified coordinator Roy Sova said, “I think this is the nicest gift bag we’ve put together for our riders and we’re still adding to it. Right now it’s worth $60-70 and likey to be worth even more by the time we do the rides.”
In the bag right now are a hat and a pen from Fleetpride, a coozie from Canale Insurance and Accounting, A T-shirt from Ferris Mowers/Briggs and Stratton, a golf towel from Cathie Weeks of Top Stitch, a large bag of potato chips from Terrell’s Potato Chips, and a T-shirt from Russ Crisafulli at Detailed Home Inspections.
“There are just a handful of rides remaining,” said Sova, “And no more than one with any driver.”
