Established through the Nutrition Consortium of NYS, the Nutrition Outreach & Education Program, which is administered locally through Catholic Charities, aims to alleviate hunger for poor and near poor residents of New York State, by expanding the availability of, access to, and use of governmental feeding programs, through outreach, education and advocacy.

Program coordinator Angela Smith has been busy promoting healthier eating and working to increase use of the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by educating those in need about the benefits of the program and encouraging those eligible to enroll.

The program, which recently expanded to establish satellite sites in the communities of Cleveland and Phoenix, will now add a site in the city of Oswego.

“I’m excited to be able to continue to expand the reach of this program and have the opportunity to continue my mission of increasing the awareness of the benefits of this program, and to make it even easier for those in need of food subsidy to access this program,” said Smith.

In addition to educating community members, Smith will also be able to pre-screen applicants for eligibility.

Smith will be available, by appointment, two Thursdays of each month at Hamilton Homes, 96 Hamilton St., across from Bosco & Geers Food Market, in Oswego.

“I’m glad that we will be able to better serve residents in the Oswego area and appreciative of Housing Visions offer to allow to use this location,” added Smith.
