Cayuga Community College is proud to report that the Nursing Program’s Class of 2011 achieved a 100 percent passing rate on the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX), surpassing the national passing rate by 12 points and the state passing rate by 15 points.
The Nursing Class of 2011 also had a 100 percent placement rate, with 100 percent of graduates seeking employment in nursing positions and 7 percent of the class continued onto a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
“We are thrilled with these results,” said Professor and Nursing Program Director Linda Alfieri. “Cayuga has a rich history of graduating exemplary nurses, and the Class of 2011 continues our tradition of excellence.”
Cayuga’s nursing graduates have traditionally exceeded state and national averages, and had earned a 97 percent passing rate previously. This is the first time, however, that the College had a 100 percent passing rate.
This year, the program celebrates its 35th anniversary. Cayuga currently enrolls 118 students in the nursing program.
The job market and starting salary are strong for registered nurses.
Registered nursing positions will grow faster than most other careers through 2018—at a growth rate of 39 percent in physician offices, 39 percent in home healthcare services, 34 percent in outpatient centers, and 22 percent in hospitals, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The average RN starting salary in the Syracuse area ranges from $17.75 to $27 an hour or approximately $36,920 to $56,160 a year, according to PayScale.com.
The Cayuga nursing program attracts a diverse range of students, from the recent high school graduate to the stay-at-home mom ready to enter the work force, to a displaced worker looking to find a second career.
Some students start out in non-credit, healthcare training certificate programs in such areas as medical assisting, medical coding, pharmacy technician, or phlebotomy.
