Celebrate Summer with an Ice Cream Social at the Cleveland Historical Society

CLEVELAND – Visit the Cleveland Historical Society for an old-fashioned ice cream social on August 16 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Enjoy scenic Tannery Pond and a sundae during the free open house at the society in the former St. James Church, North Street, Cleveland.

The theme for this year’s event is “The Civil War” in honor of the 150th anniversary of the war’s end in 1865.

An exhibit compiled by Cleveland Village Historian Joni Hinds highlights the history of veterans of the North Shore area.

Another item on display will be the miniature Bible of Civil War veteran Thomas Dean, who was present as General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee shook hands to end the war.

Dean wore the piece throughout his life on the chain of his pocket watch.

It was later recovered from the root of an apple tree at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia in 1865.

On September 10 at 7 p.m., local author and historian Jack Henke presents a free guest lecture about the history of Oneida Lake.
