Central Square Middle School students were charged with excitement as they got to cheer on their classmates at a recent robotics demonstration held in the school’s technology classroom.

Students in Jerome Devendorf’s eighth grade class made robotic vehicles for a class project focusing on engineering concepts and energy technology.
Teams were given a Lego Mindstorms kit to build their vehicle and charging station.
They were tasked to create a vehicle that would travel the farthest on a single charge.
Each team was split into two groups, with each focusing on either energy or distance.
The energy group strove to accumulate the largest amount of joules possible, through a three-minute wind charging session.
The distance group’s goal was to build the most efficient vehicle, which could use the energy collected to move the farthest distance.
Team ratings were calculated by adding the total number of joules attained in a single charge with the total vehicle distance traveled.
The robotics unit at Central Square Middle School works to further emphasize Science Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) learning along with innovative energy technology, such as wind and solar power.
This project focused on wind and kinetic energy, while their next project will focus on robotic programming and harnessing the power of solar energy.
