OSWEGO – A dedication ceremony is set for 2 p.m. this Saturday at Breitbeck Park.
At its meeting Monday night, the Common Council approved naming the viewing area at Breitbeck Park the “Charlotte Sullivan Memorial Lookout Point.”
The wife of former Oswego Mayor John Sullivan, Charlotte, was the driving force behind Harborfest in its infancy.
She secured the annual fireworks spectacular, which to this day remains the centerpiece of the festival.
The former mayor recalled a young girl’s reaction to seeing the fireworks years ago.
“She said, ‘mommy, it looks like the sky is raining stars!’ That’s quite an impression. And, the fireworks are still getting that kind of reaction to this day,” he said.
A boulder with a bronze plaque will be unveiled at Saturday’s ceremony.
“Mayor Sullivan will share some remarks and some of his children will say some remarks,” Mayor Billy Barlow said.
It is a prime location from which to view the Harborfest fireworks or to take in an Oswego sunset, the mayor added.
The former mayor thanked the current mayor and councilors for honoring the memory of his wife.
Charlotte Sullivan passed away 20 years ago.
In other action, the council approved a grant application submission for the city of Oswego Breitbeck Park Playground and Pavilion Project.
