OSWEGO, NY – As the countdown officially begins toward the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway on Sunday, August 31, we look back at the Top30 moments in International Classic history, with the assistance of George Caruso’s ’50 Most Memorable Moments of the International Classic.’

With 12 days remaining until the International Classic, the countdown continues with No. 12, Jim Shampine’s thrilling International Classic win in 1974.

During the ’74 International Classic a red flag around the lap 150 mark grouped the four front runners together for a restart.  That front four consisted of Warren Coniam in the Solvay Automotive No. 04, Bobby Stelter in the Ron Buckner No. 36, Nolan Swift in the famous 10pins, and Jim Shampine’s 8-Ball.

Once back to green it took little time for the front four to catch the rear of the pack, and that is where the fun began.  The front four began swapping positions back and forth; all while flying through heavy lapped traffic.

Coniam lost the lead to Stelter, and Stelter lost the lead to Shampine on lap 182 as Shampine pinned Stelter in behind the lap car of Eddie Bellinger Jr. in turns three and four.

With about 10 laps to go the fast four cleared lapped traffic and now went side by side, two by two for the lead; Shampine and Stelter in the front and Coniam and Swift behind them.

The Classic crowd was on its feet, but unfortunately the ending was anticlimactic.

The caution flag flew on lap 196 for a spin, and at the time there was not a rule that the race had to end under green flag conditions.  As a result Shampine crossed the finish line on lap 200 as the winner under caution followed by Stelter, Coniam, and Swift.

Nevertheless, the many race fans in the stands gave all four drivers a standing ovation as they came around one more time on their cool down lap following the finish.

John Spencer completed the top five in ’74 ahead of Ken Andrews, Johnny Logan, Jim Winks, Steve Gioia Jr. and Kempton Dates in the top ten.
