‘Classic Moments’ Countdown: #20 Bellinger Pits then Wins Fourth Classic – 1993 International Classic

OSWEGO, NY – As the countdown officially begins toward the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway on August 31, we look back at the Top30 moments in International Classic history, with the assistance of George Caruso’s ’50 Most Memorable Moments of the International Classic.’

With 20 days remaining until the International Classic, the countdown continues with No. 20, as Eddie Bellinger Jr. made a pit stop on his way to winning the 1993 International Classic.

Bellinger was now driving the Graves Chassis house car in 1993, recently vacated by Mike Ordway, and was immediately a front runner.  The question was though come Classic time, if Bellinger would attempt to pit for a tire as Ordway had tried in 1992?

As the ’93 race got underway, Bellinger rode second behind Steve Gioia Jr. past the halfway point, when a caution hit the Speedway.  It was at that time that everyone’s question was answered.  Bellinger indeed brought the Graves No. 02 to pit lane, changing tires without losing a lap.

The race began to work Bellinger’s way after the stop.

Previous race leader Gioia was involved in a crash while another race leader, Doug Heveron, lost a lap in the pits trying to make a pit stop.

Bellinger quickly made it back into the top five by lap 125, and then easily went by Gary Allbritain, Danny Soule, and Dave McKnight to take over second position.

Then race leader, Mike Ordway, proved to be of little issue as well as Bellinger’s new tires were far superior.  The No. 02 stormed by Ordway to take the lead prior to lap 150, and it was smooth sailing for Bellinger the rest of the way to his fourth International Classic 200 victory.

Ten years after the chant “Eddie B in ‘83” filled the Speedway stands, “Eddie B in ‘93” became the echo.

Bellinger was now the first driver in Speedway history to win the 200 after making a pit stop.

Russ Wood would come on to finish the Classic in the second position in 1993 followed by Pat Abold, McKnight, and Ordway in the top five.

Allbritain, Cliff Graves, Joe Gosek, Doug Saunier, and Mike Osite filled the front ten positions in ’93.
