‘Classic Moments’ Countdown: #29 Crash Takes Out the Big Three – 1958 Budweiser International Classic

OSWEGO, NY – As the countdown officially begins toward the 58th annual Budweiser International Classic 200 for Novelis Supermodifieds at Oswego Speedway on August 31, we look back at the Top30 moments in International Classic history, with the assistance of George Caruso’s ’50 Most Memorable Moments of the International Classic.’

With 29 days remaining until the International Classic, the countdown continues with No. 29, the crash that eliminated Nolan Swift, Lee Bliss, and Ed Bellinger Sr. from the 1958 running of the Classic.

During the Speedway’s stock car era in the late 1950s, Swift, Bliss and Bellinger were consistently three of the top drivers to beat.

During the second annual Classic in 1958, Bliss held the race lead followed closely by both Bellinger and Swift out front.

Much like today, the sun glare in the first and second turns was tricky in the late 50’s at the Speedway and leader Bliss was unable to tell that Buck Holiday had spun in between the first and second corners. Bliss would clip Holiday’s front end, sending him spinning.

Bellinger was then unable to avoid the crash, sending him into a collision with third place running Swift.

In the blink of an eye the three front runners in the Classic were eliminated from contention, handing the lead to Billy Blum in Nick Virgo’s No. 23.

From there Blum would drive onto victory as the winner of the second annual International Classic ahead of Frankie Schneider, Dick Jerrett Jr., Art Reynolds and inaugural Classic winner Jack Murphy.
