Cliff Looks to Revive Supermodified Career in 2015

OSWEGO, NY – A veteran of Supermodified and Small Block Super racing at Oswego Speedway, 2010 Pathfinder Bank SBS track champion Dave Cliff is looking to revive his Novelis Supermodified career at the Steel Palace in 2015, driving his family owned Gnomey Racing No. 06.

After a part-time effort with the Gnomey Racing machine in 2013 and zero starts in 2014, the Gnomey crew is hoping with a year off, and an increase in sponsorship support that the team can make another go during the Speedway’s 65th anniversary season.

“In 2014 we had to take a step back,” said Gnomey Racing team co-owner Dayna Cliff.  “With no major sponsors and a rebuild on a second new to us motor, we simply were not able to make it to the track.  We are currently looking for sponsorship for the new season, and with new sponsorship we are hoping we can return to racing at the Steel Palace the way we would like to in 2015.”

The Cliff family began weekly competition at Oswego Speedway back in 2002, when son Dave Jr. took the controls of the No. 06 Small Block Super.

A former kart racer, Cliff adapted immediately, scoring a top 15 points finish in 2003 and backed it up with his first two career victories in the division in 2004.

From 2007 to 2010, Cliff truly came to form, becoming one of the Speedway’s top SBS racers.

Cliff earned back to back Bud Light SBS Classic crowns in 2007 and 2008, along with the title of Mr. Small Block Super and a 4th place finish in points in ’08.

Another feature win and top 10 point finish in 2009 set Cliff up for a championship year at the Speedway in 2010, as the No. 06 bested Hall of Famer Mike Bond by 22-points for the championship ahead of Brian Sobus, Kreig Heroth, and Tim Barbeau.

The 2010 season not only saw Cliff claim the SBS track title, but an opportunity from Strong Racing also arose, allowing Cliff to compete with the Strong’s No. 98 Novelis Supermodified.

In his first attempt at the Budweiser International Classic in 2010, Cliff time trialed into the show and finished 14th in the 200.

With the taste of Supermodified racing and wins in all major Small Block Super events, including the Tony White Memorial and the Race of Champions, the Gnomey Racing team decided to purchase their own Supermodified prior to 2011.

With limited funds, the team took the year off and returned in 2012 with the No. 06 in search of the Rookie of the Year title.

Cliff fell just short of the mark, with Jarett Andretti grabbing top honors in the rookie battle for 2012 by only 30 points.

In 2013 the team returned with their family owned racer, finding speed early.  But incidents and engine issues kept the team from its full potential.  However, that potential did truly show on June 29 of that season as Cliff wheeled his way to his first career Novelis Supermodified top five finish on the night behind David Danzer, Tim Devendorf, Tim Snyder, and Shaun Gosselin.

With another season off to regroup for 2015, the Cliff family is poised to try again and continue their dream of contending for wins in the Novelis Supermodified division at the Steel Palace.
