CMOO Launches Build, Play, Grow Campaign

OSWEGO – A two-story Cloud Climber, water table, aluminum factory and other familiar sites are about to become a reality in the heart of Oswego.

The Children’s Museum of Oswego (CMOO) is kicking off its Build, Play, Grow Campaign this week with more than $275,000 in gifts and pledges already received.

CMOO is also pleased to announce its leadership team for the campaign.

The honorary chairpersons for the fundraising effort are Mayor Billy Barlow, Barb and Bob Bateman and Deborah and Michael Stanley.

“I am excited to see CMOO be a major part of our downtown revitalization,” Mayor Barlow said. “This is the type of project that will motivate community involvement and bring people into our community.”

The campaign cabinet members are: Mike Backus, Bill Crist, Francisco Feito, Meredith Furlong, Vicki Furlong, Heathe and Chris Jones, Carrie Patane, Tessa Smith, Shane Stepien and Austin Wheelock.

The board of trustees are: Marcia Burrell, Bree Hartmann, Chris Hockey, Emily Lukowski, Greg Mills, Jon Shaver, Heather Sugar, Eric VanBuren and Jenny Workman.

“We are off to a great start,” said Jillian Shaver, executive director, CMOO. “We’ve had some local families and businesses that have really stepped up. They’re excited about this project. Everyone is committed to make sure
our Children’s Museum has a permanent home. The civic and community leaders that are helping us with this campaign are doing an exceptional job of garnering community support for our project.”

The Build, Play, Grow Campaign stems from the museum’s strategic plan to expand exhibits and provide year-round learning and recreational opportunities for the benefit of children, families, educators and caregivers.

By 2018, the museum will:

Renovate the 8,000 square-foot space
Design, fabricate and install the permanent exhibits
Support the transition from a mobile museum to full-time operations in the museum’s downtown location

The museum has tiered its campaign goals.

The Celebration Goal of $1.2 million will allow for a generous portion
of the exhibits to be professionally fabricated and installed.

The $1.7 million Challenge Goal will allow all exhibits to be installed as well as a new lobby/admissions area and gift shop.

The Visionary Goal of $2.4 million will allow the museum to expand space, build a classroom/laboratory space and establish a $250,000 endowment to aid in the sustainability of operations.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” said Shaver. “But, we’re confident the community will respond and support our plans to let children know that they matter in our community. Not only will the museum inspire children to learn, discover, create and explore through the power of play, but it will contribute to economic development, increase quality of life for residents and promote regional tourism.”

CMOO has served as a “mobile museum” since 2013, bringing educationally enriching exhibits and programs to community events and schools across the county.

CMOO moved into its downtown location in February 2016 at 7 W. Bridge St.

The museum plans to expand exhibits and provide year-round learning and recreational opportunities.

CMOO is a non-profit and is provisionally chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.
