FULTON, NY – With kids back to school the learning begins and students of all ages will have new options this fall with the opening of CNY Arts Center facility in the lower level of State Street UMC at 357 State St.
While adult classes continue children will have Kids Onstage and Kids Onscreen to try out in Saturday classes that begin Sept. 29 and run to Thanksgiving.
Kids Onstage will offer classes for 3-5 year olds in creative movement, sharing the basics of ballet, jazz and modern dance under the direction of choreographer Amy Price (Godspell choreographer.)
Children will learn about facial expressions, hand gestures, and the physicality of storytelling from 10-11 a.m. Oct. 6, 13, 20 and Nov. 3, 10 and 17 with an anticipated performance for family on the final day of classes.
Price will continue her directorial expertise alongside Nancy Fox (Godspell director) with Kids Onstage theatre classes for 5-18 year olds from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Saturdays Sept. 29 – Nov. 17.
Students will enjoy creative movement and acting through theatre games and improvisation, develop stage presence, experience team building, and learn character development.
Immediately following Kids Onstage, Kids Onscreen will continue from 2-4 p.m. for all ages from 6 and up.
Under the direction of Courtney Angell, the children will be guided through creative story writing to develop short stories for filming. Once the students film their short stories each will be edited by filmmaker Angell.
The shorts will be presented to families at a special movie screening.
Students will keep a copy of their completed DVD.
Size of class and age of students will determine how the class is constructed and whether one film or individual films will be completed.
Monthly classes open to youth and adults include culinary arts – cake decorating, Sept. 29, spooky desserts, Oct. 27, Thanksgiving treats, Nov. 19 and classic Christmas desserts, Dec. 15.
Children must be at least age 7 to attend this class and ages 7-12 must be accompanied by an adult for these classes which meet from 9 a.m. – noon.
Holiday arts and crafts will also take place on those same Saturdays from 9 a.m. – noon with Oct. 27 featuring Halloween crafts such as spooky ghosts, decorated pumpkins and painted masks.
November 10 will offer Thanksgiving crafts making turkeys, Pilgrim hats, crafting with fall leaves and painting thankful rocks.
December 15 will focus on Christmas crafts with ornaments, trees, making wrapping paper and a special gift.
These classes are open to all ages; any child under 6 must be accompanied by an adult or sibling 12 and up.
Children are also encouraged to audition for the Christmas premiere of Macy’s “Yes Virginia…The Musical.”
The musical has just been released to schools and local theatre companies for the first time and CNY Arts Center is excited to present the timeless story onstage.
Auditions for children will be held Sept. 29 from 1-2 p.m.
Adults may audition Sept. 25 or 26 from 7-9 p.m.
The production will run Dec. 7-9 and 14-16.
Art classes for children are also part of the exciting fall lineup with a workshop in different ways to draw, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. – noon for ages 12 and up. Instructor Kendra Matott will teach a variety of different drawing methods, including some unconventional ones.
Techniques will include still life drawings, energy drawings, paint splatters, and drawing with your feet.
Students can learn the fun techniques of textured art with classes taught by arts programming coordinator Ken Blount.
This fun class will show students how to make textured art using almost anything around the house and is perfect for all art types and skill levels!
Ages 3-5 will meet Oct. 16 and 8, from 9:30 – 11 a.m.
Ages 5-10 will meet Oct. 13 and 20, from 10 – 11:30 a.m., while ages 11-15, meet Oct. 13 and 20, from noon – 1:30 p.m. Ages 15-18 will enjoy four consecutive classes Oct 5, 12, 19 and 26 from 3-9 p.m. with time for more extensive projects as will ages 17– Adult with 6 consecutive Thursdays, Oct. 4 – Nov. 15 from 6-9 p.m.
Auditions, classes and rehearsals are possible with the new facility opened in July at the State Street Methodist Church, 357 State St., with a separate entrance at Park Street.
Even so, all CNY Arts Center programming and scheduled events are subject to change.
