CNY Arts Center stages KNIT-IN for International Yarn Bombing Day

FULTON, NY – Calling all knitters and crocheters! CNY Arts Center invites you to Fulton’s downtown gazebo June 7 at 10 a.m. for knitting and crocheting.

Yarn will be provided, bring your own knitting needles or crochet hooks and a lawn chair.

The first yarn installation in Fulton, spring 2012, greeted walkers and drive-by traffic. CNY Arts Center will host a Knit-In on June 7 at the downtown gazebo.

The first yarn installation in Fulton, spring 2012, greeted walkers and drive-by traffic. CNY Arts Center will host a Knit-In on June 7 at the downtown gazebo.

In the event of bad weather, the knit-in will move indoors at Arts in the Heart Gallery across the street at 47 S. First St.

“We’re looking to bring back Yarn Bombing introduced to the community in our very first year. It’s become an international phenomenon,” said Nancy Fox, director. “With June 7 as the day set aside to beautify communities with scraps of knitted and crocheted projects. Leftover yarns and unfinished blankets become tree wraps, benches and poles are wrapped, all as colorful graffiti art with each yarn installation. Flowers, pom-poms, granny squares, almost any yarn pattern or freestyle works. “We have a huge collection of donated yarns and thought this would be a great way to bring knit and crochet lovers together for a morning of fun. Or you can bring in your own unfinished projects to easily convert to yarn bomb works of art. Granny squares are especially versatile! Finished projects will be installed onto public spaces around town, with appropriate permissions”

If there’s enough interest, the group will continue meeting on Saturdays in June and expand the fun to include other knit/crochet projects that enhance the community.

“We’ve wanted to get fabric art groups started with sewing, quilting and knit/crochet clubs,” Fox said. “We hope this will jumpstart the interest and provide a new outlet for these timeless traditions.”
