Submitted by the American Red Cross of Central New York – Oswego Branch
Kirk Coates is the American Red Cross of Central New York – Oswego Branch Dunkin Donuts Volunteer of the Month for May. He has been been with the American Red Cross of Central New York since October 2010. He was initially drawn to the Red Cross while employed as a police officer. He witnessed the good things they did and always noticed them at any disaster no matter where.. they are the ones that are always there.
During the last seven months he has volunteered at the Red Cross, Kirk has done a lot of training in Shelter operations, Fundamental Principles, Client Casework, Mass Care Overview, First Aid, CPR, AED, Emergency Response Vehicle-Ready set roll, Psychological First Aid and has been to approximately 7 fires to assist.
The most rewarding aspect of working with the Red Cross for Kirk is working with the people of the Red Cross. They are wonderful and welcoming. It also feels very rewarding to be able to help others in their time of need. The satisfaction you get knowing that you are making a difference no matter how large or small the situation is.
Kirk is keen to encourage others to volunteer for whatever they can do to help. He feels very strongly about helping our community out to make it a better place to live. Volunteering at the Red Cross is important because anyone can do most anything to help. There is a great diversity in jobs that anyone can fit right into.
Kirk was born and raised in Homer NY. He came to Oswego for a job opportunity in 1985 . He worked for the NYS University Police for over 28 years and other police agencies before that. He has since retired from the police force and is now an adjunct instructor of History at SUNY Oswego. He has been married for 31 years, and has 2 sons and a dachshund.
For Kirk’s commitment to both the American Red Cross and volunteering, he will receive a Dunkin Donuts gift card as a token of appreciation for his efforts
The Volunteer of the Month is sponsored by Dunkin Donuts, which has generously provided the Red Cross with gift cards.
