Comeback Falls Short As Oswego State Women’s Basketball Loses To Cortland 62-59

The Oswego State women’s basketball team staged a comeback in the final two minutes, but Cortland hit its free throws down the stretch to hand the Lakers a 62-59 loss. Colleen McCready (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) led four Oswego State players in double-figures with 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds. However, the Red Dragons overcame a poor performance from the free-throw line by shooting 45.1 percent (23-for-51) from the floor. Cortland’s Jessica Laing led all players with 20 points and 11 boards to help the squad improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the SUNYAC. The Lakers fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Early in the first half, Oswego State went on an 7-0 run behind a pair of free throws from McCready and five points from Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) for a 17-9 lead with 12:06 remaining in the first half. Momentum would swing the Red Dragons’ way later in the stanza as they put registered 11 straight points over a six-minute span to go ahead 31-24. However, a three-pointer by Tricia Sullivan (Sr., Copenhagen, N.Y.) pulled the Lakers to within four trailing 31-27 at halftime.

Oswego State remained in striking distance, as it trailed by one point on several occasions, but was never able to get over the hump as Cortland responded each time with a basket. The Lakers trailed 59-54 after Bacon sank a pair of shots from the charity stripe with 00:52 left to play. After the Red Dragons missed both free throw attempts on the other end, Kristen Diglio (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) made it a two-point game when she drilled a three-pointer from the left corner and 00:28 on the clock. Cortland sank three of its next four free throw shots to hang on for the 62-59 victory.

In addition to McCready’s 13 points, Bacon finished the contest with 12 points followed by Kayla Ryan (So., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) and Diglio with 11 each. Oswego State was 18-for-52 from the floor (34.6 percent) and 18-for-26 from the free throw line (69.2 percent). Allyson Biordi and Miranda Lustig joined Laing in double-digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Red Dragons overcame a 12-for-27 performance at the charity stripe by shooting 45.1 percent.

The Lakers face Oneonta at Max Ziel Gymnasium on Tuesday, Jan. 12 with a 6 p.m. tip-off.
