Mary Ann DeMar, the Director of Literacy and Universal Pre-Kindergarten, for the Fulton School District, recently spoke to the Fulton Rotary Club about the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program. The UPK program at the present time has 144, four year old students enrolled. The program started in 1998 with a class size of 34. It is funded by a grant from the New York State Education Department. The UPK program follows the New York State syllabus for pre-school programs. Each class meets for one-half day, and covers language and literacy development, math development, and social and emotional development. Children that start their education early generally do much better in school.
