Lanigan Elementary School fourth graders recently took home a piece of current Native American History.

Simple, leftover wood shavings from the making of a wooden lacrosse stick served as reminders that the native way of life goes far beyond pictures of teepees in old history books.
In the midst of their academic unit on the Haudenosaunee people, the fourth graders learned about local Native American culture from Alf Jacques, a member of the Onondaga Turtle Clan.
The Onondaga Nation is one of six nations the students learned that form the Iroquois League.
Jacques’ presentation at the Fulton Education Center included an explanation of how he makes wooden lacrosse sticks, insight on Haudenosaunee culture and the importance of preserving local history.
