7th Grade Advisory Under Way At Oswego Middle School

OSWEGO – During a recent school day at Oswego Middle School, half of the seventh grade population was asked to fill in the blank to “I Am ____________.”

Much discussion took place in the class with students, teacher assistant, counselor and administrator that were present.

Some students were quick to respond with one word; others needed a few words.

The activity was presented as part of the newly introduced seventh grade advisory sections that have taken the place of one study hall during the day for seventh graders.

Half of the seventh grade population is part of the advisory for the fall semester and the other half of the population will part of the advisory for the second semester.

Advisory programs in middle schools across the country have been established in part to help strengthen the connectedness of students at the middle level.

In general, advisory programs offer an adult advisor who meets regularly with a group of students during the school day to provide academic and social – emotional support and mentorship.

At OMS, each advisory is supervised by an ‘advisory team’ consisting of one building administrator, one school counselor and one teacher assistant.

Topics covered during the first few weeks of school include: Review and use of the school planner, what is going well in middle school, areas of concern in middle school, Jupiter grades (access, review, etc.), locker access and use and the ‘I am’ group activity.

Advisory team members are busy planning for the next few months which will include: activities in October for ‘Bullying Prevention’ month, community service activities around holiday time and review of progress reports and report cards and goal setting.
