OSWEGO – Oswego AmeriCorps members Ariel Ashline-Winters and Theresa Ryan volunteered with children to express how much gratitude a simple thank you can bring.

In conjunction with the Children’s Museum of Oswego, AmeriCorps members created a community involvement project which aimed to acknowledge the Oswego Police Department’s dedication to maintaining a safe and joyful community.

This project allowed children to creatively express their own way of saying thank you by designing a personal card.

“This project allowed children to feel part of a positive interaction with the local police department,” Jill Shaver, director of the Children’s Museum of Oswego, explained. “It is a great activity to teach children the power of saying ‘thanks!’”

After creating cards, volunteers walked to the police department to personally present them.

Because the Oswego Police Department is such a welcoming organization, the children were rewarded by exploring the inside of a police car.

There is always a positive reward for helping others. And, AmeriCorps members make that possible by serving and maintaining close ties within the community, Ariel Ashline-Winters said.
