Bikes, Brews and Burgers Returns June 20

OSWEGO COUNTY – Winona Forest Recreation Association members welcome the public to join their fifth annual “Bikes, Brews and Burgers Poker Ride” on Saturday, June 20. The non-competitive event kicks off at 10 a.m. from CCC Camp, County Road 90, Mannsville, N.Y.

The 13-mile course begins and ends at CCC Camp and features great trails and gravel roads with no serious hills or technical terrain. A new option this year is a shorter walking loop, so even those without a bike can join the fun!

Riders on bikes of all types are welcome to participate. Class 1 e-bikes (those with an electric motor that aid only when pedaling up to 20 miles per hour) are allowed on state forest trails, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

The event is described as a “poker run with a twist!” Participants will blind-draw three colored chips from a bag at each checkpoint along the trail and the event official will mark their scorecards accordingly. At the end of the course, a volunteer will draw chips to determine the point value of each color and the participant with the most points wins. In this way, no one knows how good their “hand” is until the end of the ride when values are established.

In the case of a “tie” in points, participants will cut and draw from a deck of playing cards; high card wins. There will be prizes for first, second and third place.

Registration includes event participation, an all-you-can-eat barbeque after the event and one beer for those aged 21 and over. Participants and visitors may bring their own beverages if they wish and everyone is encouraged to bring extra cash for various raffles and other purchases.

Admission also includes an annual membership package with different perks, from T-shirts to free events, so the cost varies based on your interest level:

All registration and membership proceeds go directly into trail projects and equipment maintenance. The Association is entirely run by volunteers with a passion for outdoor recreation who strive to ensure that the forest remains a fun and safe place for others to enjoy.

Winona Forest Recreation Association is a 501(c)3 non-profit and the forest it maintains is state-governed, so the Association cannot charge day-use fees or sell trail passes. Membership is the primary revenue source that funds the work its volunteers do to maintain the property. Membership data also drives grant opportunities, so more members improve these prospects.
