OSWEGO COUNTY – Learn more about the development of the Erie Canal with a presentation of “The Conception of the Erie Canal” on Tuesday, July 16. The talk begins at 7 p.m. at the Schroeppel Historical Museum, 486 Main St., Phoenix.
Led by Derrick Pratt, director of education and public programming for the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, the presentation examines the early efforts to harness New York’s interior waterways and the political wrangling that almost kept the “Eighth Wonder of the World” from happening.
The presentation will also reference the old Oswego Canal, which ran through Phoenix and connected the Erie Canal to the city of Oswego and Lake Ontario. The Erie Canal celebrates its bicentennial in 2025.
The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments are provided courtesy of the Schroeppel Historical Society. Donations are greatly appreciated.
