Sheriff’s Office Hosting Internet Safety Presentation for Parents and Guardians

OSWEGO COUNTY – The Sheriff’s Office is inviting parents, guardians, educators, and community members to attend an important internet safety presentation focused on protecting children in today’s rapidly evolving digital world.

This informative presentation is designed to help parents move from feeling overwhelmed and uncertain to becoming informed, confident, and equipped with the tools they need to better safeguard their children online. Topics will include sextortion, popular apps and hidden features children are using, grooming tactics commonly used by predators, warning signs families should recognize, and resources available to support parents and caregivers.

Officials emphasize that this presentation is important for parents of children of all ages — not just teenagers. Many online risks begin at younger ages than parents may realize, and technology continues to change rapidly. Whether a child is using social media, gaming platforms, messaging apps, or simply spending more time online, parents need to understand the dangers that can exist in digital spaces and how to respond proactively.

“Technology can be a powerful tool, but it also creates opportunities for exploitation and manipulation,” said Investigator Christy Bunce, a presenter at the info session. “Our goal is to provide parents with practical, real-world information that empowers them to recognize threats early, start important conversations at home, and better protect their children online.”

Attendees will leave the presentation with:

The Sheriff’s Office encourages all parents and caregivers to attend and take advantage of this valuable opportunity to become more informed about the realities children face online today.
