OSWEGO – The H. Lee White Maritime Museum offers tours of historic maritime vessels and the Oswego West Pierhead Lighthouse, weather permitting, during the annual Lake Ontario Waterfront Festival on Saturday, May 17. The event runs from noon to 4 p.m. at the museum on West First Street Pier in Oswego and admission is free.

Vessel tours include the Ontario, a replica of a 19th century topsail schooner being finished for sail training, and the canal boat Derrick Boat 8, a steam-powered vessel with a construction crane built on a barge in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1927 to work on the New York State Barge Canal.

The U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) and Oswego Fire Department (OFD) will also have vessels at the event for viewing. Weather-permitting, OFD will conduct mock in-water rescue demonstrations.

Boat rides to tour the Oswego Lighthouse will also be available, weather permitting. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children ages 5-12. Tour boats leave from Wright’s Landing between 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Contact the H. Lee White Maritime Museum at 315-342-0480 to reserve tickets and a time.

Other festival exhibitors include Adventure at Burritt’s with modern recreational boats and e-bikes, the Oswego Yacht Club, and the Antique and Classic Boat Society: Finger Lakes Chapter. New York Sea Grant and USCG Auxiliary exhibits will feature boating safety equipment and information.

The Lake Ontario Waterfront Festival also features live raptor presentations with the Braddock Bay Raptor Research team; The Happy Pirates performance troupe; children’s activities, such as making a toy boat for Sailboat Sprint races on the pier; and Great Lakes outdoor recreation, science and conservation exhibitors.

A new exhibit at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum features a bicentennial celebration of the opening of the New York State Erie Canal.
