MEXICO – The Town and Village of Mexico announced that their joint Agricultural and Farmland Protection Plan was completed in February. The plan is a comprehensive strategy to protect farmland, strengthen local farms and sustain agriculture as a defining part of the community’s identity and economy.

A joint public hearing will be held on Monday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at the Mexico Middle School auditorium located at 16 Fravor Rd., Mexico, N.Y. Residents, farmers, landowners and business owners are all encouraged to attend and provide comments prior to final adoption by the Town and Village Boards.

The Plan was developed through a collaborative process involving municipal leaders, farmers, agricultural organizations and the public. It includes detailed mapping of agricultural lands, identification of priority farmlands and recommended actions to reduce farmland fragmentation, enhance farm viability, support marketing and promotion of local products and improve farm-friendly policies.

The goal of the Plan is to provide a roadmap to help the Town and Village sustain agriculture as a viable, long-term use and economic sector in the community.

The newly completed Plan documents current agricultural conditions, identifies trends and challenges and establishes clear strategies to:

Once adopted, the Plan will also serve as an addendum to the joint Comprehensive Plan that is currently being written. This will strengthen the ability of both the Town and the Village to secure state and federal funding to implement the various recommendations made in the Plan.

Community participation is encouraged as Mexico takes this important step to ensure agriculture remains strong for future generations.

Written comments will be accepted through March 30, 2026. Send them to the Town Clerk at 64 S. Jefferson St., Mexico, N.Y. 13114, or the Village Clerk at 3236 Main St., Mexico, N.Y. 13114.
