APW Battle of the Books Champions

Students in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District put their literary knowledge to the test for a chance to be crowned a champion, a Battle of the Books champion.

Battle of the Books is a nationally recognized literacy program coordinated in Oswego County through the Oswego County BOCES School Library System and at APW through district coordinator and high school librarian Adam Wall.

The program encourages students to read, enhances reading comprehension and promotes teamwork as well as academic excellence.

Students from the elementary school and junior/senior high school volunteered to participate in this program by committing to read 12 to 15 books from a predetermined list.

The students, working in teams of two to three members along with a coach, discussed the books and quizzed each other on the contents in preparation for the district-wide competition.

Team Unknown is now well-known. The team won first place in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District Battle of the Books Competition, grade level five/six. The recent district-level competition brought together the top six teams from the elementary school for a level three/four competition, the top six teams from the elementary school for a level five/six competition, the top three teams from the junior high school for level seven/eight competition, and the top two teams from the senior high school for a nine through twelve competition.

During each level of competition teams were asked 16 questions about the books on their book list and were given 30 seconds to provide an answer.

Points were awarded for each correct title and author provided.

Clinching first place honors from the grade level three/four competition was the team of Caralyn Benedetto, Paige Metott, and Eva Pattison.

Second place was the team of Brianna Fields, Katie Trumble, and Amelia Auringer.

Third place was the team of Juliana Bresha, James Winnie, and Abigail Skellington-Bice.

Taking home gold in the grade level five/six competition was the team of Evan Colvin, Jillian Mueller, and Jacob Trudell.

In second place was the team of Helaina Hale, Lara Kinney, and Abagail Sweeney and in third was the team of Abigail Babcock, Natalie Horning, and Katelin Castor.

The team of Peyton Nadeau, Marisa Barber, and Mikenzie Barankovich earned first place in the grade 7-8 competition with the team of Rose Wilson and Diana LaRock in second and Ashley Racine and Victoria Dickenson in third.

Rounding out the competition and earning first place honors in the grade level nine through twelve competition was the team of Conny Reardon, Gage Walker, and Donovan Vold.

The first place teams at each level have earned the honor to represent APW in the upcoming county-wide competition slated to take place on May 1 at the APW Junior/Senior High School.

Grade level champions from school districts across Oswego County will participate in this upcoming competition, vying for the chance to earn the distinction of Oswego County Battle of the Books Champion.
