Assembly Republican Leader Brian Kolb (R,I,C-Canandaigua) and Assemblyman Robert Oaks (R,C-Macedon) will hold a Town Hall meeting Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the Wayne County Courthouse, 26 Church St., Lyons to discuss a “People’s Convention to Reform New York,” and how it could deliver the positive change New Yorkers are demanding.

A People’s Convention is a grassroots, non-partisan effort to empower taxpayers to take back their state government and chart a positive direction for New York.

Some of the issues that could be considered during a People’s Convention include fiscal reforms like a property tax and state spending cap, debt reform, along with a ban on “backdoor” borrowing and unfunded mandates. Governmental reforms such as initiative and referendum, an independent Legislative Redistricting Commission, term limits for Legislative Leaders, ethics reform and a succession plan for state offices could also be considered as part of a People’s Convention.

Kolb will also discuss his non-partisan legislation, “The People’s Convention to Reform New York Act.” If enacted, the bill would put the question of whether New York should convene a “People’s Convention” on the ballot; by law, this question automatically goes before voters in 2017. The non-partisan measure would move up the opportunity for reform by six years.

Additionally, on Tuesday, March 8, Assemblyman Oaks will hold an interactive tele-town hall meeting on New York’s 2011-12 budget. He will hear questions, comments and concerns from residents of the 128th Assembly District, and share his thoughts and priorities. The call will begin at 7 p.m. Those who would like to participate are asked to please call the assemblyman’s office at 315-946-5166 or email [email protected] prior to March 7. On March 8, the event’s phone system will dial participants to join them to the call.
