Fairgrieve Elementary School students in grades kindergarten through two were treated to a recent visit from author and illustrator Nancy Carlson.

Library media specialist Barb Senecal announced during the Morning Express program during Carlson’s visit that several students in those respective grade levels who offered good deeds to their peers were selected for a special reward alongside Carlson.
While some kindergartners were rewarded with story hour with Carlson, the first-grade and second-grade winners received special art time with Carlson.
Senecal also announced that all students in grades kindergarten through two would receive an autographed Carlson book, thanks to fundraising efforts.
During the Morning Express program, Carlson shared that each Fairgreive student, and all children and adults, should start their day each morning by saying her favorite line in her “I Like Me” book: “Hi, good looking.” There is nothing better, she said, than beginning one’s day with positivity.
Following Morning Express, Senecal welcomed Carlson in the library, where she offered grade-level discussions on her life as an author and illustrator.
During the kindergarten section, she told the young students that she enjoys writing and drawing and has completed 67 books.
The students learned that everything that happened to her characters happened to her in real life, such as being nervous before a dance recital.
Carlson said many situations are what children can relate to while growing up.
All it takes to write and illustrate stories, she said, is imagination.
She also encouraged the students to complete a doodle a day, to become better artists.
She has done that for the last 10 years. The kindergartens sat quietly in amazement as Carlson explained how to draw characters from her books using simple geometric shapes.
