BOCES Students Help Others Brush Up on Dental Health

Second grade students at Altmar Elementary School have a sweet tooth for reading and for learning and received a special treat on February 29 when they were visited by Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) students from the Oswego County BOCES Adult Education Department.

CDA students presented a fun program about the importance of establishing and maintaining good oral health care and hygiene habits.

Catchy rhymes such as “up like a rocket, down like a plane, back and forth like a choo-choo train” and “swish, swish like a fish to get the things your toothbrush missed” helped the young students remember how to effectively brush and rinse to keep their teeth clean and cavity-free.

The CDA students also explained to the second graders what they can expect when they visit a dental office. They talked about some of the instruments that a dentist uses and provided each student with a dental mirror to take home.

They also gave each student a medical glove and a surgical mask and explained that a dentist wears these items not to be scary, but to prevent germs from spreading.

CDA students at Oswego County BOCES are required, as part of their curriculum, to coordinate and present an educational outreach program and coincided the recent presentation with Altmar Elementary School’s efforts to promote oral health care during National Children’s Dental Health Month.
