Brewerton Elementary Holds Coding and Robotics Fair

Brewerton Elementary welcomed some new “guests” to its school this year.
Perhaps you’ve seen them wandering around the hallways or tooling around in classrooms. These special new guests are robots, Finch Robots, to be specific.
Corry Derschang, library media specialist at Brewerton Elementary won a grant through the BirdBrain Technologies LLC Finch Robot Loan Program, providing Finch Robots for the school to use for up to two months.
These robots are being utilized in kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms and students are using them to learn the fundamentals of robotics and coding.
Once the loan period ends, the robots and accessories are packaged up and sent to the next lucky school to enjoy.
To highlight this new enrichment opportunity, Brewerton Elementary held its first Coding and Robotics Fair in the school’s library.
The event gave students the opportunity to show parents about the basics of coding and robotics they are learning in class.
This was accomplished by visiting the various stations throughout the fair, each with interactive activities to complete using Finch Robots, Ozobots, Bloxels, Dash and Dot Robots, and Shpero Robots.
Even a radio controlled BB-8 from Star Wars was on hand to illuminate the vast technology students have at their fingertips.
The fair also served as an introduction to the new Brewerton Bots Coding and Robotics Club.
The evening was very well received by students, parents, board members and staff.
Derschang expressed how pleased she is with the how well the students have integrated technology into their school learning.
“We are very grateful to BirdBrain Technologies for the Finch Robots, but also to the Brewerton PTA. They were so impressed with how excited students were to learn about robotics, they purchased other coding and robotic equipment for the school to enhance the learning experience for all our students,” she said.
