Buddy and Porky Pet Health – Getting Rid of Skunk Odor

Dear Readers,
Our friends at Black Cat Dog Designs (check out their website www.blackcatdogdesigns.com for very cool handcrafted pet furniture) sent out an email a couple of weeks ago with a wonderful tip for dog lovers, a homemade solution to deal with skunk odor.

Way better than the old tomato juice trick, which we all know absolutely does not work.

Yes, we know all of our readers’ dogs are perfectly well-behaved and would never do something as dopey as trying to make friends with or starting an argument with a skunk.

But maybe your neighbor’s dog? Wink, wink.

Here’s the formula:

2 cups hydrogen peroxide

1/8 cup baking soda

1 teaspoon dish detergent

Mix it together, rub it thoroughly into your stinky dog’s fur, (keep it away from the eyes).

Rinse with water, towel dry.

You may get a little wet and soapy yourself, but your dog will not stink and he definitely will not smell like skunk mixed with tomato juice.

You can just double the recipe for a large dog, but discard any of the solution that you don’t use.

Never try to store it.

The reason this works is that the oxygen molecules in the soapy mixture neutralize the odor by bonding to thiols in the skunk liquid.

By changing the chemical makeup of the original spray, the smell is neutralized.

Don’t you just love science?

And dogs?
