Dear Readers,
Here comes the Humane Society again, trying to make you feel guilty about something as harmless as giving your kids a cute little bunny for Easter.
But this is serious folks.
Ask a rabbit if it’s harmless.
There are hundreds of abandoned and surrendered rabbits up for adoption just in the Central New York area and some estimates say that up to 80% of them started out as Easter gifts.
Please trust us . . . we like rabbits and they make great indoor pets for patient, quiet, diligent grown-ups.
Do any of you know of a “patient, quiet, diligent” toddler?
We didn’t think so.
Rabbits don’t particularly like to be carried around.
They are easily frightened and will bite or scratch in self-defense.
They have very specific dietary and habitat needs.
They can be trained to make great pets but are actually more work than most dogs or cats.
And no, domestic rabbits will not survive if you just put them outside.
So for your adorable animal-loving kids, think chocolate bunnies.
Or adopt an adult cat who can fend for herself and will not be terrified of them.
The real bunnies will thank you.
Speaking of Spring, the Fur Ball is coming up on April 28 from 5:30 to 11 at the American Foundry, West Seneca Street, Oswego.
A plated dinner, cocktail hour, music and dancing, fabulous silent auction, more fun than a litter of puppies and kittens!
Well maybe not—but still a lot of fun.
