Butterfly Garden Constructed at Maroun Elementary

Carrie Spoto , Kelly Damiano, and Laura Reschke, kindergarten teachers at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School (MAM) worked long and hard along with students from the high school to construct a butterfly garden in the courtyard at MAM. Spoto found information online about a grant available at kidsgardening.org and with help from local gardening expert, Rose Musumeci, Spoto and others selected the plants for the garden. The garden is mostly perennials including cone flowers, lambs ear, lupine, scabiosa and Queen Anne’s lace to name just a few.

Children in the kindergarten classes helped pick out the seeds and planted them in March. Mrs. Musumeci then raised the plants in her greenhouse until they were ready to plant in the garden.

Students in other classes have enjoyed watching the progress of the garden and the development of the plants. Next year other classes hope to join in and expand the garden’s current size.
