Camp Waves of Hope, a summer camp for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one, is an overnight camp Aug. 17-20 at Camp Hollis this year, said Elena Twiss, executive director, Friends of Hospice In Oswego County (FOHOC). Applications are now being accepted for mini buddies (age 5-7), campers (age 8-12) and big buddies (ages 13-18). This program is open to any child who has experienced the loss of a loved one. OSWEGO, NY – Camp Waves of Hope, a summer camp for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one, is an overnight camp Aug. 17- 20 at Camp Hollis, said Elena Twiss, executive director, Friends of Hospice In Oswego County (FOHOC). We offer a day camp option for ages 5-7 on Sunday August 17th, overnight camp for big buddies (teens) from Sunday through Wednesday and an overnight option for campers age 8-12 from Monday through Wednesday. Twiss said.
The Friends of Hospice in Oswego County host this unique camp experience with support from the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, NYS Office of child and family services and the Shineman Foundation. “Now in its 26th year, Camp Waves allows children to enjoy fun summer camp activities, mixed with therapeutic healing circle interventions led by certified mental health counselors,” Twiss said. “This three-day camp allows children to make connections with peers, learn coping skills, and how to process complex emotions that accompany grief, all while taking part in fun events and activities.”
Applications are now being accepted for mini buddies (age 5-7), campers (age 8-12) and big buddies (ages 13-18). Big buddy volunteers will receive 72 hours of community service as well. This program is open to any child who has experienced the loss of a loved one.
