Cantine Scholarship Awarded To Daniel Grant, N2DRG

FULTON – The Fulton Amateur Radio Club presented the Thomas G. Cantine Jr. Memorial Scholarship to Daniel Grant, N2DRG, of Clayton at its May meeting.

“Daniel is a perfect student,” Tom’s wife, Pam, W2TQF, said. “Tom would have picked him himself. He’s been interested in radios from a young age and his achievements are exemplary.”

Tom’s sister, Chris and her husband were on hand for the award presentation.

Daniel holds a general class amateur radio license and is a graduating senior at Thousand Islands High School in Clayton.

He’s a member of the National Honor Society, the Robotics Club and many other activities.

He plans to attend St. Lawrence University in Canton.

The scholarship was established after the untimely death of Thomas G. Cantine Jr., who was an active amateur radio operator for more than 50 years.

Obtaining his license at the age of 13 in 1957, Tom held the call sign W2TQF.

His hobby of amateur radio led to a career as a sales engineer and engineering consultant.  He taught amateur radio classes, was a volunteer examiner, and was active in ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) and RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service).

Tom was a charter member of the Fulton Amateur Radio Club and served as the president of the radio club for several terms.

“This was more than Tom’s hobby,” Pam said. “He saw amateur radio as a way to open the doors to many things in the world.”

Created in 2012, the annual college scholarship of $500 is awarded to licensed amateur radio operator(s) from Oswego, Onondaga, Cayuga, or Jefferson counties.

Competition is open to undergraduate students pursuing a career in electronics, engineering, communications, broadcasting, computer science, medical, or business-related fields.

Selection is based on significant prior involvement in amateur radio, evidence of outstanding leadership and community service.

The student must meet and fulfill the requirements.

The selection committee is comprised of members of the Cantine family and members of the Fulton Amateur Radio Club, with the Cantine family having final authority on the recipient(s).
