CiTi Students Get A Heaping Helping Of Project-Based Learning

A project-based learning activity in Mary Ryan’s classroom at the Center for Instruction, Technology and Innovation recently wrapped up with a culminating activity that included a visit from a local bakery owner.
Since October, students have been writing journals, researching recipes, and working together to make tasty snacks and create a cookbook of “no bake” treats.
They showcased their work recently, as they welcomed local bakery owner Denise Stewart into their classroom.
Stewart, who owns the Bake Shop Eatery in Mexico, conducted a taste test, reviewed the cookbook the students made, and offered input and advice to the budding bakers.
“Everything was really good,” she said. “I love the cookbook, it’s really cute. The old-fashioned Betty Crocker cookbook is so thick and clumsy, but your cookbook is a quick, go-to one.”
In addition to receiving positive feedback from Stewart, teachers also applauded the students’ efforts.
“This was such a vast project and the students really did a great job,” Ryan said. “Students worked individually to research recipes for each season. They wrote journals as part of the English language arts component. Math lessons were implemented for measuring. Students orally presented, created, tasted and reflected upon their recipes. This project hit all subject areas and helped develop soft skills too.”
