CiTi Students Learn Art Of Building A Resume

MEXICO – Select students at the Center for Instruction, Technology & Innovation recently learned just how important building a proper resume can be.

Students in three career and technical education programs at CiTi recently attended a resume workshop held by Paula Annesi, a high school coordinator at Bryant & Stratton College.

Annesi discussed a variety of resume-building strategies, including popular mistakes high school students make when building a resume.

“The goal of a resume is to get an interview, and the goal of an interview is to get hired,” said Annesi. “Sometimes, people write the resume thinking it will get them the job and subsequently put too much information in the resume.”

Annesi said younger, inexperienced applicants sometimes make the mistake of placing irreverent information in a resume, such as skills that don’t fit the job description, providing poor references and listing personal attributes.

According to Annesi, younger applicants should also steer clear of chronological resumes, and should instead focus on building an accurate, skills-based resume.

“A lot of people with ample work experience like to use a chronological resume. Now, you guys may not have a lot of experience, but you do have skills from joining these programs,” said Annesi.

Annesi also discussed the importance of checking for grammar. Spelling mistakes are one of the easiest ways to have a resume thrown out, Annesi said.

“There is no excuse for spelling mistakes. My generation didn’t grow up with spellcheck on the computer. So we don’t see any reason for a spelling error, especially when you have technology to help,” said Annesi.
