Cookie Decorating Helps Granby Students Learn NY Geography

GRANBY, NY – Granby Elementary School fourth graders have learned the sweet side of geography.
The annual New York State cookie project helped reinforce a social studies unit, which focused on the state’s geography and attributes.
Students completed a self-assessment checklist, which helped them record activity highlights and improvement plans.
The fourth graders were most happy to use a New York State-shaped chocolate chip cookie with M&Ms representing major cities, blue icing for rivers, Hershey Kisses and chocolate chips for mountain ranges and mini M&Ms were used for other identifying features of the students’ choice.
“I learned all about the rivers and the mountains, and where they are,” said Asia Godbay.
As a part of the unit, fourth grade teacher Julie Wood said students colored in a New York State book of symbols, made info-graphics about the state and will make travel brochures for any New York vacation spot.
