County Legislature Recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

OSWEGO, NY – Members of the Oswego Legislature Human Services Committee presented staff members from Oswego County Opportunities Services to Aid Families program with a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Oswego County.

SAF, the domestic violence and rape crisis program serving Oswego County, served almost 600 victims and survivors in 2015.

Representatives from ARISE, the Office for the Aging, and SUNY Oswego also attended the proclamation to show their support in recognizing victims and survivors in the community.

Last year, 25% of the individuals SAF served had a disability and a growing number are elderly.

In addition, SAF continues to advocate on behalf of victims and survivors on the SUNY Oswego campus in collaboration with SUNY Oswego’s Title IX Coordinator.

Staff from the SAF program, which have hosted a number of events to help raise awareness of domestic violence in Oswego County, invite the public to wear purple, the symbolic color of domestic violence awareness, on Thursday, October 20, in recognition of National Wear Purple Day.
