‘Curtains’ comes to GRB stage in March

Members of Fulton’s Quirk’s Players are in the midst of rehearsals for “Curtains,” a whodunit murder mystery/comedy that will come to the G. Ray Bodley High School auditorium for a three-day run in March.

Although the show title may not be as widely recognized as classics like “Hello, Dolly” or “Phantom of the Opera,” the show’s director, Tom Briggs, is confident that “Curtains” will keep audience members entertained and on their toes for the duration of the performance.

“Even though it’s a newer show, it’s old-fashioned Broadway. There are huge, lavish numbers,” Briggs said, noting that “Curtains” is a play within a play. “It should be a fun show for the audience and the actors.”

Set in Boston, Mass., in 1959, a theater troupe struggles to impress their audience, and their show is met with disdain from newspaper critics.

The woman who has the lead role is horrible, and the first night during curtain call, she is murdered on stage.

That sets the scene for an entertaining murder mystery.

“Everybody in the cast and crew are suspects, so they bring in this police detective and he’s not only helping them solve the crime, but he’s also a huge theater buff, so he’s helping to improve their show,” Briggs said. “The detective falls in love and gets caught up in the show, and it’s a really interesting story.”

While the storyline is solid, Briggs said that the 50 cast and crew members are what will truly make the show a success.

“These are great kids, they’re here because they want to be here,” Briggs said. “This is something that interests them. They’ve got the drive, and I have confidence that this will be another great production.”

In addition to Briggs, teachers and faculty members involved in the show include Thomas Nami, music director; Rob Lescarbeau, assistant director; and Doreen Forbes, choreographer.

“Curtains” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 6, 7 and 8 in the G. Ray Bodley High School auditorium.

A matinee performance will be held at 2 p.m. March 8 in the auditorium as well.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for senior citizens and children age 12 and younger.
