A partnership between the district and the Oswego Police Department, the 10-week D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) curriculum is designed to allow students to interact directly with a police officer in an open discussion setting.

On Monday, OPD Officer Thomas Grover addressed a fifth grade classroom at Kingsford Park Elementary School in the first D.A.R.E. session of the year.

Grover began the lesson by engaging the students with discussions about keeping a positive attitude and responsibility to themselves and others.

“The whole program is about teaching better decision-making and hopefully that will follow throughout the students’ lives,” said Grover.

School officials have said the D.A.R.E. program is part of a wide range of educational resources the district will use to deter its children and young adults from drug and alcohol abuse, as well as the opportunity to build trust and familiarity with law enforcement.

“We want our students to see that police officers are a part of our community and are there to help,” said Kingsford Park Elementary Principal Mary Volkomer.
