OSWEGO COUNTY – Students in Michele Gowans’ Spanish classes at Dennis M. Kenney Middle School recently had the opportunity to combine creativity with cultural learning during a unique after-school painting event.
Using “Painting to Gogh” kits, students created their own versions of “Fiercely Frida,” a vibrant tribute to iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her famous self-portraits. The artwork features Frida adorned with a crown of soft, colorful blooms and her signature bold brow; serving as a celebration of individuality, strength, and self-expression.
Prior to the event, students had been studying Frida Kahlo as part of their Spanish curriculum, exploring her life, artistic style, and cultural impact. The painting session provided a hands-on extension of that learning, allowing students to connect more deeply with the material in an engaging and memorable way.
Throughout the evening, students followed step-by-step guidance while also adding their own personal touches, making each painting a unique reflection of the artist behind it. The experience emphasized that art is not only about technique, but also about self-reflection and embracing what makes each person different.
